Introduction

The Portuguese Government decision, albeit preliminary, of selecting the Campo de Tiro de Alcochete (Alcochete shooting range) as the final site for the construction of the future new Lisbon Airport, following a comparative study of this location and that of Ota, undertaken by LNEC (the National Civil Engineering Laboratory), marks the conclusion of long activity cycle of NAER, Novo Aeroporto S.A.

NAER is a public limited company, whose shareholders are ANA, Aeroportos de Portugal S.A., NAV, Navegação Aérea de Portugal, E.P.E. and the Portuguese State, that was created by Decree-Law n. 109/98, of April the 28th, with the object of “carrying out all the activities and tasks inherent to setting up and executing the decisions pertaining to the planning and launching of the construction of a new airport in mainland Portugal”.

The selection of a new location for an infra-structure whose indispensability is fully acknowledged and that will generate a paramount contribution for the economic development, not only of the region it directly serves but of the country itself, brings about a new and intense work cycle that is now beginning.
